1896‐1984 American geographer and Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin. Known for his research on Japanese geography, he frequently visited Japan to conduct fieldwork. His books include A Reconnaissance: Geography of Japan (1934), Japan: A Physical, Cultural and Regional Geography (1945), and Japan: A Geography (1965).
