Cape Futtsu

A cape in Futtsu City, southwestern Chiba Prefecture. The beak-shaped sand spit stretches for about 5 kilometers and divides Tokyo Bay into an inner bay and an outer bay. Sediment flowing from the Koito River and sand from Cape Isonezaki were deposited by the tidal currents, advancing the sand spit. Artificially planted black pine trees protect the area from sea breezes and blowing sand, creating a green space, and the coastal plant community is designated as a prefectural natural monument. At the end of the Edo period, senior councilor Matsudaira Sadanobu built a battery, and in the Meiji period, the area became a fortress zone, with the first, second and third sea forts built to defend Tokyo Bay. After World War II, it was opened to the public, and development has progressed as a tourist hub for Minamiboso Quasi-National Park. There are clamming sites, a swimming beach and a seaweed farm around the cape, and the use of the sea surface can be clearly observed.

千葉県南西部、富津市にある岬。長さ約5キロメートルにわたって鳥のくちばし状に延びた砂嘴(さし)で、東京湾を内湾と外湾に分ける。小糸川から流れ出た土砂や磯根岬(いそねざき)からの砂が潮流で堆積(たいせき)して砂嘴を前進させた。潮風と飛砂を防ぐ人工植栽のクロマツが緑地をなし、海浜植物群落は県天然記念物に指定されている。幕末に老中松平定信(さだのぶ)が砲台を築き、明治時代に入ると一帯は要塞(ようさい)地帯として東京湾防衛のため第一～第三海堡(かいほう)がつくられた。第二次世界大戦後は一般に開放され、南房総国定公園の観光拠点として整備が進んだ。岬周辺には潮干狩場、海水浴場やノリ養殖場があり、海面の利用状況がよく観察できる。
