Ago Bay - Agowan

Japanese:
Ago Bay - Agowan

The bay is the largest on the Shima Peninsula, nestled between the Shima Peninsula in the central-eastern part of Mie Prefecture and the Saki-Shima Peninsula, which extends westward from Nakiri, Daio-cho, Shima City. It was formed when Japan's largest raised marine plateau was eroded to carve a fine river valley, then subsided again. The tip of the low-lying plateau forms a typical ria coastline, sinking into a calm inner bay, in which large and small islands such as Kashikojima, Tatsunojima, Doigaharajima, Tendojima, and Yokoyamajima float. The feminine natural beauty and the group of pearl farming rafts filling the water surface are internationally known as a representative landscape of Okushima, and it forms the core of Ise-Shima National Park. The Kintetsu Railway Shima Line runs through the bay, connecting it to Osaka and Nagoya. From Kashikojima, there are sightseeing boats and regular boats to Hamajima, Goza, and Wagu. The views of Ago Bay are wonderful from Yokoyama (203 meters) west of Ugata, Tomoyama (48 meters) in Funakoshi, Daio-cho, Shima City, and Konpirayama (99 meters) in Goza. Since ancient times, this inner bay has produced Akoya oysters, known as "Shiratama of Shima" (natural pearls), and sardines were caught in fixed nets to provide bait for bonito fishing. Tadoshima Island in the bay is where Mikimoto Kokichi first succeeded in pearl farming in 1890 (Meiji 23), and since then Ago Bay has become a major producer of cultured pearls in Japan. Kashikojima was home to the National Pearl Research Institute (which was merged into the Aquaculture Research Institute in 1979 and moved to Nansei Town, now Minamiise Town, in 1983. It later became part of the Fisheries Research Agency and then an Aquaculture Research Institute under the Fisheries Research and Education Agency).

The area around the bay has rapidly developed into a tourist destination in recent years, and now includes hotels, villas, a yacht harbor, golf courses, and an aquarium.
