King of Castile (reigned 1252-1284). He expanded his territory by fighting against Muslims (the Reconquista Wars), and was elected German Emperor in 1257 during the Interregnum, but gave up due to opposition from the Pope. He was betrayed by his son and nobles, which led to civil war and led to his dethronement. He was famous as a promoter of the arts and sciences, commissioning an astronomer to create the Catalogue of Alfonsines and himself writing the Code of Septuagint.
