There are records that book fairs were held annually in Frankfurt as early as the end of the 15th century, and in the 16th century countries such as England and France began to participate, and it is said that it was very popular in the 17th century. 図書展,書籍見本市と訳され,多数の出版社がそれぞれの出版物を持ち寄って,主にその販売権,出版権などの売買を目的とした展示会のことをいう。とりわけ世界の約20ヵ国で定期的に開催されている国際図書展のことをさすことが多いが,そのうち最大のものはドイツのフランクフルト市のもの(Frankfurter Buchmesse)である。フランクフルトではすでに15世紀末には毎年ブック・フェアが開かれていた記録があり,16世紀にはイギリス,フランスなども参加するようになって,17世紀にはたいへん盛んであったという。
