A decisive battle between Muslim and Crusader forces at Hiṭṭīn, west of Lake Tiberias. In March 1187, Salah al-Din declared a holy war (jihad) and gathered 12,000 regular troops and over 20,000 auxiliary troops from Egypt, Syria, and Jazira, while King Guy of Jerusalem gathered an equal number of Crusader knights to oppose him. The battle ended on July 4 with an overwhelming victory for the Muslims, and Salah al-Din, who captured Guy, used the momentum to recapture Jerusalem for the first time in about 80 years in October of the same year.
