An Austrian-born Jewish conductor, pianist, and composer. Born in Krakow, Poland, he studied at the conservatory in his hometown and at the Vienna Conservatory. In 1918, he became the conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Chorus, and thereafter served as the conductor and music director of opera houses and symphony orchestras around the country. From 1936 to 1946, he served as the principal conductor of the New Symphony Orchestra (now the NHK Symphony Orchestra), making a great contribution to improving the orchestra's level. In 1949, he obtained American citizenship, and served as music director of the New York City Opera from 1952 to 1956, and music director of the Cologne Opera from 1958 to 1960. He returned to Japan in 1951 and became honorary conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. He continued to visit Japan frequently thereafter, and devoted himself to nurturing Japanese conductors and symphony orchestras.

オーストリア出身のユダヤ系指揮者，ピアノ奏者，作曲家。ポーランドのクラクフに生まれ，生地の音楽院とウィーン音楽院に学ぶ。1918年ウィーン・フィルハーモニー合唱団指揮者となり，以後，各地の歌劇場，交響楽団の指揮者・音楽監督を歴任。1936年−1946年には新交響楽団（現NHK交響楽団）の常任指揮者を務め，同楽団の水準向上に大きく貢献した。1949年米国籍を得，1952年−1956年ニューヨーク・シティ・オペラ音楽監督，1958年−1960年ケルン歌劇場音楽監督。1951年に再来日し，NHK交響楽団名誉指揮者に就任。以後もたびたび来日し，日本の指揮者，交響楽団の育成に尽力した。
