An Austrian-born Jewish conductor, pianist, and composer. Born in Krakow, Poland, he studied at the conservatory in his hometown and at the Vienna Conservatory. In 1918, he became the conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Chorus, and thereafter served as the conductor and music director of opera houses and symphony orchestras around the country. From 1936 to 1946, he served as the principal conductor of the New Symphony Orchestra (now the NHK Symphony Orchestra), making a great contribution to improving the orchestra's level. In 1949, he obtained American citizenship, and served as music director of the New York City Opera from 1952 to 1956, and music director of the Cologne Opera from 1958 to 1960. He returned to Japan in 1951 and became honorary conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
