American Beethoven scholar and musicologist. After graduating from Harvard University, he became interested in Beethoven's biography while working as an assistant librarian at the university library. In 1849, he began collecting biographical materials in Europe, and thereafter settled in Europe and devoted himself to writing. In 1862, he served as a member of the American legation in Vienna, and later as consul in Trieste. His biography of Beethoven (vol. 1, 1866; vol. 2, 1872; vol. 3, 1879), which remains exemplary today for its faithful reproduction of the facts, was published during his lifetime in translation by German musicologist and critic H. Deiters (1833-1907), and volumes 4 (1907) and 5 (1908) were completed by Deiters and H. Riemann based on materials left behind by Deiters after his death.

アメリカのベートーベン研究家，音楽学者。ハーバード大学卒業後，同大学図書館司書補として働くうちにベートーベンの伝記に興味を抱き，1849年以降ヨーロッパで伝記資料の収集を始め，以後ヨーロッパに定住して著述に専念した。62年ウィーンのアメリカ公使館員，のちトリエステ領事を務めた。事実を忠実に再現しようと心がけた，今日なお模範的な彼の《ベートーベン伝Ludwig van Beethovens Leben》(1巻1866,2巻1872,3巻1879)は，彼の存命中第3巻までドイツの音楽学者･評論家のH.ダイタース(1833‐1907)訳で出版され，4巻(1907)，5巻(1908)は彼の死後に残された資料に基づいてダイタースとH.リーマンによって完成された。
