1817‐97 American Beethoven scholar and musicologist. After graduating from Harvard University, he became interested in Beethoven's biography while working as an assistant librarian at the university library. In 1849, he began collecting biographical materials in Europe, and thereafter settled in Europe and devoted himself to writing. In 1862, he served as a member of the American legation in Vienna, and later as consul in Trieste. His biography of Beethoven (vol. 1, 1866; vol. 2, 1872; vol. 3, 1879), which remains exemplary today for its faithful reproduction of the facts, was published during his lifetime in translation by German musicologist and critic H. Deiters (1833-1907), and volumes 4 (1907) and 5 (1908) were completed by Deiters and H. Riemann based on materials left behind by Deiters after his death.
