The Roman goddess of victory, corresponding to Nike in Greek mythology. Her origins are unknown, but she has been revered as a symbol of Rome since the Republican period, and has been worshiped alongside Jupiter and Mars. Her temple on the Palatine Hill is famous, and statues of her as a winged goddess were placed at the Gate of Rome and Ostia. A statue that Augustus had installed in the Senate chamber was removed under pressure from a Christian emperor in the 4th century, but non-Christian Romans such as Symmachus protested against this, which is well known.
