A disease in which large amounts of iron are deposited in various organs due to abnormalities in iron metabolism. It was named in 1889 by German pathologist Friedrich von Recklinghausen (1833-1910). It can be divided into primary (hereditary) and secondary (due to chronic anemia, cirrhosis of the liver, excessive iron intake, blood transfusions, etc.). It is more common in men than women, with a 10:1 ratio, and symptoms often first appear after the age of 45. This is the result of excessive iron absorption in the intestines, which causes the deposition of excess iron over a long period of time, and in women, the onset of the disease is prevented by the loss of iron during menstrual bleeding.
