A Buddhist sculptor of the correct lineage of the Kei school in the early Kamakura period. Hokkyo Yasuben is the third son of Unkei. Following his father, he and his brother Tankei created the Nio and Niten statues at Kyoogokokuji Temple (around 1198) and the statues at the Hokuen-do Hall of Kofukuji Temple (1208). His representative work is the Tentouki and Ryutouki statues at Kofukuji Temple (national treasure), created in April 1203 (15), which conveys the style of the Kei school.
