A woman from ancient Rome. Along with her grandmother Melania the Elder, she is famous as an example of a noblewoman who entered Christian monasticism. Born into an old family in Rome, she married the nobleman Pinianus at the age of 13. At the age of 20, she and her husband decided to enter an ascetic life together, and sold her estates in Sicily, Africa, and Spain, which had given her an annual income of 120,000 solidi, and invested the money in charitable activities. In 410, she left Rome and stayed in North Africa for a while before traveling to Palestine, where she founded a monastery.
