...Humans have long been aware of the existence of ammonia due to its distinctive odor, and in the past it was produced in the form of ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl) by sublimation from organic soot or from sodium chloride and urine. The name ammonia comes from the fact that the sand (whose main component is ammonium chloride) found near the Temple of Amun (Greek: Ammon) in ancient Egypt was called sal ammoniacus.
