Kagoshima Main Line - Kagoshima Main Line

Japanese:
Kagoshima Main Line - Kagoshima Main Line

The name of the Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu). It consists of two sections, 232.3 km between Mojiko and Yatsushiro, and 49.3 km between Sendai and Kagoshima, for a total of 281.6 km of operating distance. However, the Kagoshima Main Line was not established as the above section until 2004, when the Kyushu Shinkansen opened its 137.6 km section between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kagoshima-Chuo. Prior to that, the 116.9 km section between Yatsushiro and Kawauchi was also included in the Kagoshima Main Line (later the Hisatsu Orange Railway section), and it was a main railway line that ran north and south across western Kyushu, connecting cities such as Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima. The double-tracking rate is 69% (February 2004). The Moji (now Mojiko)-Yatsushiro section was originally opened by the Kyushu Railway Company between 1889 and 1896 (Meiji 22-29), and after nationalization it was briefly called the Hitoyoshi Main Line, but in 1909 (Meiji 42) it was renamed the Kagoshima Main Line. At the time, the route (most of the current Hisatsu Line) ran from Yatsushiro into the Kuma River basin, passing through inland Hitoyoshi and Yoshimatsu, but to avoid the steep slopes of the Yatake Pass, a route around the coast was opened between 1913 and 1927 (Taisho 2-Showa 2), and this became the Kagoshima Main Line when the entire line was completed. Electrification work was carried out gradually from the Mojiko side between 1961 and 1970 (Showa 36-45), and AC electrification was completed on the entire line. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, it became part of Kyushu Railway Company.
