Gyōchi

Year of birth: 1778
A mountain ascetic, Shugendo scholar, and Siddham (Sanskrit) scholar in the late Edo period. Commonly known as Matsunuma, his pen names were Enichi and Akobo. He succeeded his father Gyoben as the chief priest of Kakuun-in Temple at Ginkgo Hachimangu Shrine in Fukui-cho, Asakusa, Edo. He studied Japanese and foreign classics under his grandfather Gyoharu and his father, and was well versed in the poetry and calligraphy of the Reizei family, and was particularly skilled in Siddham studies, teaching them to Hirata Atsutane. He was appointed head of the Tozan school of Shingon Shugendo and Hoin Daisozu. As faith and practice in Shugendo had declined, he wrote many books on the history, historical traditions, and teachings of Shugendo with the intention of reviving them, which have been passed down to the present day. <Works> Konohagoromo, Suzukakegoromo, and Fuunrokuji

江戸後期の山伏,修験道の教学者,悉曇(梵学)学者。俗称を松沼,字を慧日,阿光房と称した。父の行弁のあとを継いで,江戸浅草福井町の銀杏八幡宮の覚吽院を住持した。祖父の行春と父について内外の典籍を学び,冷泉家歌道,書道によく通じ,特に悉曇学にすぐれ,平田篤胤に教授した。真言宗系修験道の当山派の惣学頭,法印大僧都に任じられる。修験道の信仰や修行が衰退したため,復興しようとする意図のもとに,修験道の来歴・故事伝承・教学に関する著作を多く著して,今日に伝えている。<著作>『木葉衣』『鈴懸衣』『踏雲録事』
