Women's Week - Fujinshuukan

Japanese: 婦人週間 - ふじんしゅうかん

Established in 1949 by the Ministry of Labor to hold events nationwide to improve the status of women, this week commemorates April 10, 1946, the day Japanese women first exercised the right to vote. A theme appropriate to the year is chosen, and awareness-raising activities such as lectures and symposiums are held in various locations. Early themes focused on raising women's awareness and capabilities, but during the first half of International Women's Year (1975) and the subsequent United Nations Decade for Women, the theme was "promoting gender equality and women's participation in society," and during the second half, the theme was "joint participation of men and women in all fields."

女性の地位向上のための行事が全国的に実施されるよう，労働省が1949年から設けたもので，日本女性が初めて参政権を行使した1946年4月10日を記念し，毎年この日に始まる1週間を指す。その年にふさわしいテーマが選ばれ，各地で講演会，シンポジウムなどの啓蒙活動が行われる。初期のテーマは，女性の意識向上･能力向上が中心であったが，国際婦人年(1975)およびそれに続く〈国連婦人の10年〉の前半期には〈男女平等と婦人の社会参加をすすめる〉が，後半期には，〈あらゆる分野への男女の共同参加〉がテーマとなった。
