A deciduous medium-sized tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It can grow to 3-6 meters in height, and occasionally reaches 10 meters. The trunk is dark black. The leaves are alternate, simple, and obovate. The young leaves have a lot of white fluff on both sides, but later almost all of it disappears. In April and May, the tips of the branches that appear that year bear numerous white, five-petaled flowers, each about 3 cm in diameter. The petals are broadly linear. The fruit is a pear-shaped, spherical fruit, about 6 mm in diameter. The sepals remain even when the fruit is in full bloom. It grows mostly in low mountain areas, and is distributed from Honshu to Kyushu and the Korean peninsula. It was named after the inflorescence, which resembles a bow. It is also known as Shidezakura (four-handed cherry tree). The Amelanchier genus consists of about 25 species, but all but three are found in North America. It is cultivated in gardens for its white flowers and beautiful fruit.
