Ushiuma - Ushiuma

It is an animal of the order Perissodactyla of the class Mammalia, family Equidae. It is a breed of horse in the same family, but lacks the long hair of its mane and tail, and is named after the cow because it resembles it. It stands 1.2 to 1.3 meters tall, has a rather large head, and fine, curly fur. Its coat is chestnut, and in summer it becomes almost hairless all over its body. It was brought back from Korea during the Bunroku-Keicho Invasion (1592-98). It was a specialty of Tanegashima and was designated a natural monument, but became extinct in 1946 (Showa 21). It no longer exists on the Korean Peninsula.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱奇蹄(きてい)目ウマ科の動物。同科の1種ウマの1品種であるが、たてがみと尾の長毛を欠き、ウシに似ているのでこの名がある。体高1.2～1.3メートル、頭はやや大きく被毛は繊細で縮れている。毛色は栗毛(くりげ)で、夏季に全身ほとんど無毛となる。文禄(ぶんろく)・慶長(けいちょう)の役（1592～98）に朝鮮から持ち帰ったものである。種子島(たねがしま)特産で天然記念物に指定されていたが、1946年（昭和21）に絶滅した。朝鮮半島にも現存しない。
