A city in the central south of Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1991. It occupies an area of farmland on the Musashino Plateau, and was once home to rice and wheat, but has since switched over to Sayama tea, greenhouse horticulture, and floriculture. Since the 1960s, the city has seen a rapid expansion of electrical equipment, metal, and other factories, and its population has been booming. The Tobu Tojo Line, Ogose Line, and Kan'etsu Expressway run through the city, and in 1996 the Ken-o Expressway opened between Tsurugashima Junction and Ome IC. 17.65 km2 . Population: 69,990 (2010). 埼玉県中南部の市。1991年市制。武蔵野台地上の畑作地帯を占め,米,麦栽培を中心としていたが,狭山茶,施設園芸,花卉栽培などへ転換してきている。1960年代以降,電気機器,金属など工場の進出が激しく,人口も急増している。東武鉄道東上線・越生(おごせ)線,関越自動車道が通じ,1996年圏央道の鶴ヶ島ジャンクションと青梅IC間が開通した。17.65km2。6万9990人(2010)。
