...A politician and diplomat in the late Edo period. Commonly known as Shuri. Called Iga no Kami and Higo no Kami, his pen name was Oudokoro. The third son of the hatamoto Shitara Sadatake. He was adopted into the hatamoto Iwase family. In 1851 (Kaei 4), he became a professor at Shohei Academy. In 1854, he was selected by Abe Masahiro to become a metsuke, and in the same year was ordered to be in charge of military system reform, and was involved in the construction of Shinagawa Battery, the establishment of the Kobusho and the Bansho Shirabesho.
