Octopus starfish - Octopus starfish

A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Asteroidea, family Starfish. This starfish has a round disk in the center of its body from which 20 to 40 octopus-like arms radiate out. The arms are easily torn off and fall off, but they regenerate easily, and because the regenerated arms are short, the arms are uneven in length overall. It grows to a diameter of nearly 40 centimeters. Its body color is not uniform, with a mixture of pale purple and red spots. It has a habit of feeding on bivalve shellfish and is considered a pest in the fishing industry. It is found along the coasts of Hokkaido and northern Honshu.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門ヒトデ綱ヒトデ科に属する海産動物。体の中央部が丸い盤となり、そこから放射状にタコの脚(あし)のような腕が20～40本伸び出たヒトデ。腕は切れて落ちやすいが、再生しやすく、再生腕は短小なので、腕の長さは全体として不ぞろいとなる。直径40センチメートル近くになる。体色は一様でなく、淡紫色と赤色の斑(ふ)が混じり合う。二枚貝を食害する習性があり、水産業上の有害動物とされる。北海道と本州北部の沿岸部に分布する。
