An aristocrat from the Nara period. Son of Fujiwara no Ugo and the daughter of Ojida Ushika. Fifth son of Ugo. Also written as Taimanro. In 740, he was exiled to Oki (Shimane Prefecture) for his involvement in the rebellion of his elder brother Fujiwara no Hirotsugu, and after being recalled two years later, he retired to Ninafuchiyama in Yamato Province (Inabuchi, Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture) and devoted himself to Buddhism. In 761, he was ranked as a Junior Fifth Rank. The following year, he was appointed as a deputy envoy to Tang China, but was unable to travel to Tang China due to a breakdown in his ship. In 766, he became a councilor. He subsequently served as Minister of the Center, General of the Center Guard, and General of the Konoe Guard, and was promoted to Minister of the Right in 782. He died as Minister of the Right, Junior Second Rank, and General of the Konoe Guard, and tutor to the Crown Prince. He was said to have been a gentle person who was not competitive in anything.

奈良時代の貴族。藤原宇合と小治田牛養の娘の子。宇合の第5子。太満侶とも書く。天平12(740)年,兄藤原広嗣の乱に連座して隠岐(島根県)に配流,2年後に召還されてからは大和国蜷淵山(奈良県明日香村稲淵)に隠棲して仏道に専念したという。天平宝字5(761)年,従五位下。翌年には遣唐副使に任じられたが,船の故障で唐に渡らなかった。天平神護2(766)年参議。以後,中務卿,中衛大将,近衛大将などを歴て,天応2(782)年右大臣に昇った。右大臣従二位兼近衛大将皇太子傅で死去。物に競うことなしと評される温厚な人物であったらしい。
