Haushofer, Karl
Born: August 27, 1869 in Munich
[Died] March 13, 1946. German political geographer near Weilheim in southern Bavaria. Born as the son of a professor at the University of Munich, he served as a brigadier general in the military until the end of World War I. He served in Japan from 1908 to 1910. He became aware of the global issues of political geography, and in 1924 founded the Zeitschrift für Geopolitik (Geopolitical Report). He lectured on geopolitics at the University of Munich in the 1920s and 1930s, and his theories were used by his student R. Hess to justify the aggressive policies of Nazi Germany. In 1944, towards the end of World War II, his son Albrecht, who was a professor at the University of Berlin, was arrested by the Gestapo for his involvement in the July 20th incident. After the war, he was found not guilty at the Nuremberg Trials, but he committed suicide together with his wife in grief over his son's death. Main author: "Geopolitik des pazifischen Ozeans" (1924).
