Okabe Kinjiro - Okabe Kinjiro

Japanese:
Okabe Kinjiro - Okabe Kinjiro

Electrical engineer. Born in Nagoya. After graduating from Tohoku Imperial University, Okabe became an assistant professor at his alma mater before becoming a professor at Nagoya Technical School in 1929 (Showa 4). He became an assistant professor at Osaka Imperial University in 1935 and a professor in 1939. During this time, he invented the split-anode magnetron for generating microwaves at Tohoku University (1927). This research significantly improved the performance of the single-anode magnetron, which had been invented in 1921 by A. W. Hull of General Electric in the United States. At the time, the shortest wavelength was about 24 cm using the Barkhausen-Kurtz oscillating tube (BK tube), but Okabe succeeded in stably oscillating at a wavelength of 12 cm. This led to rapid development of magnetrons for radar. Okabe later experimented with a four-split anode structure and established the current multi-split anode magnetron system. In 1936, he was awarded the Asahi Culture Prize for his research on microwaves. In 1944, he was awarded the Order of Culture. Professor Emeritus at Osaka University.
