…Later, Alexandre Émile Béguyer de Chancourtois (1819-86) of France discovered a new pattern, that is, that when atoms are arranged according to their atomic weight, elements with similar properties appear at almost equal intervals. Based on this, he published an original diagram called the vis de terre (spiral of the earth) in 1862, which arranged elements in a spiral around a cylinder (Figure 1). In addition, JAR Newlands of England published the law of octaves (also called Newlands' law) in 1865, which states that when elements are arranged in order of atomic weight, a similar element appears every eighth element, which is very similar to an octave in music. These were the first steps towards the modern periodic law, but their value was not recognized because of their too original content and novel expression. …
