Fujiwara no Tanetsugu - Fujiwara no Tanetsugu

Japanese:
Fujiwara no Tanetsugu - Fujiwara no Tanetsugu

A politician from the late Nara period to the early Heian period. Grandson of Fujiwara no Umakai of the Shiki family. Father of Nakanari and Kusuko. His uncle Momokawa and others made great contributions to the accession of Emperors Kōnin and Kanmu, which is why he was highly valued by Emperor Kanmu. The Emperor delegated the day-to-day affairs of the government to Tanetsugu and his full brother, Crown Prince Sawara. As the construction of Nagaoka Palace progressed, the relationship between the Crown Prince and Tanetsugu gradually deteriorated. This is thought to be because Tanetsugu was the Minister of Ceremonies, the person in charge of all civil servant personnel, and was a capable and hardworking man in the role of Chief Commissioner for Palace Construction, so people's trust was focused on Tanetsugu rather than the Crown Prince. In September 785 (Enryaku 4), as part of a conspiracy by officials from the Togubo Palace and the Otomo clan, he was shot at the palace construction site and died the next day.
