His mother was the daughter of Shiraino Yoroshi. In 733, he traveled to Tang (China) with Ei'ei to seek a teacher of the precepts. He encouraged Dosen to come to Japan, and in 753, Ganjin came to Japan, and returned to Japan. He lived at Todaiji Temple, and in 759, he petitioned the shogun to plant fruit trees along the roadside to make it easier for travelers. His Buddhist name is also known as Gyogyo.
