When a person dives underwater to work, the pressure of the air or gas mixture they breathe is equal to the pressure at that depth, so gas dissolves in the body. When they finish working and return to the surface, the pressure decreases, so the gas dissolved in the body is expelled, but if the pressure is reduced too quickly, the nitrogen bubbles up and cause many damage to the body (decompression sickness).
