Ganban - Ganban (English spelling)

A xylophone-shaped instrument found in Indonesia and the Philippines. It has 16-25 wooden, bamboo, or bronze keys arranged in musical scale on a boat-shaped resonator, and is played with two sticks. Wooden ones are called gambang kayu, and are used as melodic ornamental instruments in Javanese gamelan. The bronze gambang gangsa has fallen out of use and is rarely seen today. In Bali, there is a gamelan gambang that includes a bamboo gambang. These are tuned to the slendro or pero series. Xylophones of this type are widely distributed in Southeast Asia, such as ranāt in Thailand and pattalā in Myanmar (Burma).

インドネシアとフィリピンの木琴形体鳴楽器。舟形の共鳴箱の上におよそ16～25の木、竹、青銅の鍵(けん)を音階順に並べたもので、2本の桴(ばち)で奏される。木製のものはガンバン・カユgambang kayuとよばれ、ジャワ島のガムランのなかで旋律装飾楽器として使われる。青銅製のガンバン・ガンサg. gangsaは今日では廃れ、ほとんどみられない。バリ島には竹製のガンバンを含む合奏、ガムラン・ガンバンgamělan g.がある。これらはスレンドロまたはペロ音列に調律される。なお、同種の木琴はタイのラナートranāt、ミャンマー（ビルマ）のパッタラーpattalāなど、東南アジアに広く分布している。
