Also called ergonovine. Uterine contraction hemostatic agent. A type of alkaloid extracted from ergot, it has a strong uterine contraction effect. It acts directly on the smooth muscle of the uterus to cause rapid contraction, which is rhythmic and sustained. Unlike other ergot alkaloids, it does not have a sympathetic nerve blocking effect and is less toxic. It is mainly used after childbirth, when uterine tone is reduced. It contracts the uterus and also facilitates placental detachment and reduces bleeding. It can also be administered orally. Side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and tinnitus may occur. Ergometrine maleate is a semi-synthetic derivative of ergometrine, which has a stronger uterine contraction effect than ergometrine and is used for the same purpose as ergometrine. It has almost no side effects. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
