Fujimura Yoken

Japanese: 藤村庸軒 - ふじむらようけん
Fujimura Yoken

A tea master in the mid-Edo period. A disciple of Sen no Sotan. Commonly known as Genbei, his given name was Masanao, and later Tocho. The son of Hisada Soei from Omi (Shiga Prefecture), he was adopted into the Fujimura family, a Kyoto kimono merchant. As the Fujimura family was a purveyor to the Ise Todo family, he served them. He studied Confucianism under Miyake Kisai (Boyo) and later Yamazaki Ansai, and was good at poetry. He first studied tea under Yabuuchi Jochi and Kobori Enshu, and later studied under Sen no Sotan. Known as "Cha Hakushi," he is counted as one of Sotan's four heavenly kings. Known among his tea ceremonies are Hangoan, which he held at his residence in Nishinotouin Shimotachiuri (Kyoto City), Tennenzuetei, which he built at his Isome residence in Omi Katata (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture), and Yodomi, which he held in his later years at Kurodani Konkaikomyo-ji Saiouin (Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City), the latter two of which still remain. Yoken Shishu was compiled after his death. Kusumi Soan, who wrote Chawashigetsushu, was his son-in-law. His grave is in Kurodani.
