Treasures of Hildesheim - How to Know Hildesheim

A collective name for 62 pieces of silver tableware from the Imperial Roman period that were unearthed in 1865 during the construction of a shooting range near Hildesheim in Lower Saxony in northern Germany. Before World War II, they were housed in the State Museum in Berlin, and are now housed in a museum in the same city. About half of the pieces have inscriptions indicating their weight and the name of their owner, and it was discovered that the pieces originally belonged to multiple people, but ended up in the hands of a high-ranking Roman official and were buried underground before the outbreak of war in the region in 9 BC. The pieces were made in Italy, Gaul, and the Rhine basin, but the plant and animal motifs and divine figures embossed on the surfaces of the pieces all have a strong classical tendency that reflects the style of late Hellenistic art, making it clear that they were made in the Augustan period.

ドイツ北部，ニーダーザクセン州のヒルデスハイム近郊で，1865年射撃場建設に際して出土した帝政ローマ時代の62個の銀製食器の総称。第2次大戦前はベルリン国立博物館，現在は同市の博物館に所蔵される。その約半数には重さと所有者の刻銘があり，それらの食器は本来は複数の人の持物であったが，ローマ高官の手に渡り，前9年の当地方の戦争勃発前に土中に埋められたことが判明した。製作地はイタリア，ガリア，ライン川流域にわたっているが，器面に打ち出された植物文，動物文，それに神像はいずれもヘレニズム美術後期の様式を反映した古典主義的傾向が強く，このためアウグストゥス時代に作られたものであることが明らかとなった。
