[1] (Karl Polanyi) Hungarian-born economic anthropologist. Persecuted by the Nazis, he was active in the UK and the US. He extracted three modes of exchange of goods - reciprocity, redistribution, and barter - and systematized economic anthropology by considering market and non-market societies. His works include "The Great Transformation" and "Economy and Civilization." ( 1886-1964 ) [2] (Michael Polanyi) Hungarian-born physical chemist and philosopher. Younger brother of (1). Mainly active in the UK and the US. He researched the plastic deformation of metal crystals, and after the war he also worked as a philosopher. He placed emphasis on non-verbal communication and developed a unique theory of knowledge and science based on "tacit knowledge." His works include "Personal Knowledge" and "Dimensions of Tacit Knowledge." ( 1891-1976 )

[一] (Karl Polanyi カール━) ハンガリー生まれの経済人類学者。ナチスに追われ、英米で活躍。物資の交換形態として互酬・再分配・交換の三様式を摘出し、市場社会と非市場社会に考察を加えて経済人類学を体系化。著に「大転換」「経済と文明」などがある。（一八八六‐一九六四）[二] (Michael Polanyi マイケル━) ハンガリー生まれの物理化学者、哲学者。(一)の弟。主として英米で活躍。金属結晶の塑性変形などを研究し、戦後は哲学者としても活躍。非言語を重視して「暗黙知」に基づく特異の知識論、科学論を展開した。著「個人的知識」「暗黙知の次元」など。（一八九一‐一九七六）
