During the Frankish period, the Kingdom of Burgundy existed in the Saône and Rhône valleys, with the Alps and the Jura Mountains as its eastern borders. After the 9th century, as the Frankish Kingdom broke up, the land west of the Saône River in the Kingdom of Burgundy became part of the West Frankish Kingdom and came to be called Burgundy.
