The name of a region in southwestern France, occupying the northwestern part of the Gironde department. It lies to the north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde River estuary, and is a major Bordeaux wine-producing region. The gravelly sandy layer distributed in this region is called Graves, and since it is suitable for grape cultivation, many vineyards are spread over it. The Upper Médoc region in the south produces high-end wine brands such as Château Lafite, Château Margaux, and Château Latour, while the Lower Médoc region near the estuary produces general wines.
