[Early Modern Period]
From the end of the Muromachi period through the Momoyama period, women's hairstyles gradually became more sophisticated, and early styles of hairstyles such as the Karawamage and Hyogomage began to appear. The Karawamage is characterized by a simple, wild look, and the Hyogomage adds a little more skill to this, but these are imitations of men's topknots, and were first worn by courtesans.
