Arlberg School - Arlberg

...This is called the Lilienfeld school, and it uses a long stick and is based on the Stembogen (a turn made by opening the tail of the ski to brake). There was a debate about which was better, the Norwegian school or the Lilienfeld school, but eventually the two schools adopted each other's strengths, and H. Schneider, a ski teacher in Arlberg, Austria, compiled them into the Alpine skiing technique known as the Arlberg school. This is the basic technique for alpine skiing, and with the emergence of a French school led by Émile Allais, alpine skiing developed in Germany and Switzerland as well.
