For example, the integer 1985 is written as

1985=1×10 ³ +9×10 ² +8×10+5

In other words, it is a way of expressing numbers by grouping the 10 numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 into groups of 10 and carrying them up to the next digit. In general, an n- digit integer a _n _-1 a _n _-2 … a ₁ a ₀ means a _n _-1 10 ^{n -1} + a _n _-2 10 ^{n -2} + ... + a ₁ 10 + a ₀ , where 0≦ a ₀ , a ₁ , …, a _n _-2 ≦9 , 1≦ a _n _-1 ≦9. This number system is called the base 10 decimal system.
