Died September 13, 1877. Santarém Portuguese novelist, poet, and historian. One of the founders of Romantic literature in Portugal. In 1828, he went into exile in France for a time, but returned to the country as a soldier of Dom Pedro IV. In his later years, he lived a secluded life in his villa in Santarém, and achieved great success as a thoughtful writer and historian. Making extensive use of ancient documents, he wrote História de Portugal (1846-53) and Da origem e estabelecimento da Inquisição em Portugal (54-59). His works include the historical novel Eurico, the Priest (44), Monge de Cister (48), and the poem A Harpa do Crente (38).
