Born: March 28, 1810, Lisbon Died September 13, 1877. Santarém Portuguese novelist, poet, and historian. One of the founders of Romantic literature in Portugal. In 1828, he went into exile in France for a time, but returned to the country as a soldier of Dom Pedro IV. In his later years, he lived a secluded life in his villa in Santarém, and achieved great success as a thoughtful writer and historian. Making extensive use of ancient documents, he wrote História de Portugal (1846-53) and Da origem e estabelecimento da Inquisição em Portugal (54-59). His works include the historical novel Eurico, the Priest (44), Monge de Cister (48), and the poem A Harpa do Crente (38).
