...In the 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment, when widespread interest in science began, and the achievements of the Académie des Sciences in France and the Royal Society in England became widely known, European countries rushed to establish national academies of science. The philosopher Leibniz was the most influential person in promoting scientific research, and in 1700, he lobbied Frederick I of Prussia to establish the Royal Society of Sciences (Societas Regia Scientiarum) in Berlin (later renamed the German Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin). Others included the Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm (1739) and the Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1725), founded by Peter the Great....
