Khūzistān (English spelling)

Japanese: フージスターン（英語表記）Khūzistān

A region in southwestern Iran, downstream of the Qarun River. Khuzestan is the Arabic name, and in Persian it is Khōzestān. Currently, the province of the same name is located there, and its borders are the Iraqi border to the west, the eastern coast of the head of the Persian Gulf to the south, and the Zagros Mountains to the northeast. Its capital is Ahwaz. It has an area of about 66,500 ^km2 and a population of 3.18 million (1991). Geographically, it is part of the Mesopotamian Plain, and most of the inhabitants are of Arab descent. The climate is hot and humid, but the annual precipitation is low at around 150 mm.

イラン南西部，カールーン川下流の地方。フージスターンはアラビア語の呼称で，ペルシア語ではホーゼスターンKhōzestān。現在，同名の州が置かれ，西はイラク国境，南はペルシア湾頭の東海岸，北東はザーグロス山脈が境界線となっている。州都はアフワーズ。面積約6万6500km²，人口318万(1991)。地形的にはメソポタミア平原の一部をなし，住民の多くはアラブ系である。気候は高温･多湿であるが，年降水量は150mm前後と少ない。
