This is an old-style Japanese boat that was used from around Izumozaki in Niigata Prefecture to the western end of Toyama Bay. It was used for coastal fishing using beach seine nets and fixed nets, but is now less common. It is usually 10-11m long, with a shoulder width of about 1.4-1.5m, and made mainly of cedar, with 5-7 planks joined together. The technique of folding the planks on both sides still remains, so it is thought that in the past it was a hollowed-out boat. The rowing equipment is oars, and 6-7 oars are used for large boats, and 4 for small ones. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
