Noh piece. Fourth piece. Five-school contemporary piece. Author unknown. Inspired by the poem "Shinano no naru Asama no yama mo yureru so fu fu kahiyana karamu" from the "Gosen Wakashu," this is a murder case involving a fight over a role between gagaku musicians. Tennoji Asama, a master of taiko drums, is summoned to an event for the Kangen music at the Imperial Palace, and hates and kills Fuji of Sumiyoshi-sha, a master of taiko drums who participated voluntarily in the hope of a role. Fuji's wife (shite), frightened by an ominous dream, travels to the capital with her daughter (kokata), where she hears from a government official (waki) of her husband's violent death and grieves. Wearing the costume that was left to her by her husband, the wife dances in a frenzy, believing that the drum is her husband's enemy, and beats it together with her daughter to get revenge, before returning to her hometown. The anonymous Noh piece "Umegae" is a dreamlike piece based on the theme of the contemporary Noh play "Fuji Taiko," and depicts a woman's deep longing for her husband.
