Faith in Mt. Fuji. It is a representative form of mountain worship in Japan. The mountain's beautiful shape has been the subject of nature worship since ancient times. In the early Heian period, Tono Ryoka's Fujisan-ki describes the plumes of smoke from the active volcano as two beautiful women in white dancing on the mountain's peak, indicating that the mountain god is a goddess. In later times, the mountain god of Fuji was assumed to be the mythical Princess Konohanasakuya, but she is also known as Asama no Okami. During the process of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, Asama no Okami became known as Asama Daibosatsu, but her image was still that of a goddess.
