1884‐1963 Leader of the Israeli labor movement and President of Israel (in office 1952-63). His real name was Yitzchak Shimshelevitz Shimshi. Born in Ukraine, he joined the Zionist workers' movement and emigrated to Palestine in 1907. He was active as the Palestinian representative of Poale Zion, and served in the U.S. and British armies during World War I with Ben Gurion and others. After the war, he led the activities of the Labor Party (MAPAI), and after the establishment of the State of Israel, he became a member of the Knesset for the party.
