A lizard of the order Squamata, family Gamaidae, class Reptilia. Also known as the Komodo dragon, it is known as the world's largest lizard. It is found on the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Padar, and Flores in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. It is a large lizard with a total length of 2 to 3 meters, and although there are various theories about its body length, existing individuals reach a maximum of about 3 meters. It is slightly longer than the New Guinea monitor lizard V. salvadorii , which is 4 meters long, but its thick body, powerful tail, developed limbs and claws make it worthy of the name "dragon" or "land crocodile." It lives in forests in hilly areas, and sometimes appears on grasslands and coasts. It is terrestrial, and young individuals can also climb trees. It feeds on mammals such as deer, wild boar, monkeys, and goats, and attacks prey with its powerful jaws and claws, but knocks down larger prey or enemies with its powerful tail. Young individuals feed on lizards, mice, birds and sea turtle eggs. Although they are aggressive, they rarely attack humans, and are treasured by local residents who call them "Ola" (brothers). They have been protected by the government since 1931. [Takahiro Matsui] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
