Japanese: 有機水銀化合物 - ゆうきすいぎんかごうぶつ（英語表記）organomercury compound

A general term for compounds that have mercury bonded to carbon atoms such as alkyl or aryl groups. There are two types: dialkyl (or diaryl) mercury _R2Hg type and alkyl (or aryl) mercury halide RHgX type (R is alkyl or aryl, X is a monovalent acid radical). Dialkyl and diaryl mercury are non-polar, volatile, colorless, toxic liquids or low-melting solids. Examples are dimethylmercury, diethylmercury, and diphenylmercury. Organic mercury compounds are not decomposed by air or water, but are decomposed by light or heat to form free radicals. Dialkylmercury is often used in the synthesis of organometallic compounds because it has the property of alkylating other metals. RHgX type compounds are crystalline solids, and some are covalent or ionic compounds depending on the type of X, so they are more soluble in organic solvents than in water. Manufacturing method

The general synthesis method is to react mercury chloride with a Grignard reagent in an appropriate molar ratio. It can also be obtained by decarboxylation of mercury salts of carboxylic acids. The reaction of unsaturated carbon compounds with mercury salts was a useful method for industrial organic synthesis, as mercuration and oxymercuration via intermediate organic mercury compounds, but it is rarely used anymore due to various conditions, including pollution problems.

Toxicity of organic mercury compounds

When inorganic mercury enters an animal's body, it is quickly excreted and hardly penetrates the central nervous system. On the other hand, once organic mercury enters the body, it accumulates in the central nervous system. Methylmercury, which has become a problem as a causative agent of pollution-related diseases, is thought to have been discharged directly from factories, or inorganic mercury from factories that has been methylated by the bacteria methylcobalamin. Methylmercury in seawater accumulates through the gills of seafood, and then in the bodies of wild birds and humans that eat these seafood, affecting the central nervous system. Phenylmercury was used as a herbicide, but its production and use was discontinued after the toxicity of organic mercury became clear.

アルキル基やアリール基などの炭素原子と水銀の結合をもつ化合物の総称で、ジアルキル（またはジアリール）水銀R₂Hg型と、ハロゲン化アルキル（またはアリール）水銀RHgX型の二種類がある（Rはアルキルまたはアリール、Xは一価の酸基）。ジアルキルおよびジアリール水銀は非極性で、揮発性があり、無色、有毒な液体または低融点の固体である。たとえば、ジメチル水銀、ジエチル水銀、ジフェニル水銀などである。有機水銀化合物は、空気あるいは水によっては分解されないが、光または熱により遊離基的に分解される。また、ジアルキル水銀は、他の金属をアルキル化する性質があるため、しばしば有機金属化合物の合成に利用される。RHgX型化合物は、結晶性固体であり、Xの種類により共有結合化合物であったり、イオン結合化合物であるので、水よりも有機溶媒によく溶けるものもある。たとえば、ヨウ化メチル水銀などである。

製法

一般的合成法は、塩化水銀とグリニャール試薬を適当なモル比で反応させる。また、カルボン酸の水銀塩から脱炭酸することにより得られる。不飽和炭素化合物と水銀塩との反応は、中間に有機水銀化合物を経由する水銀化およびオキシ水銀化などとして有機合成上工業的にも有用な方法であったが、公害問題などを含めた諸条件のため、ほとんど使用されなくなった。

有機水銀化合物の毒性

無機水銀は動物の体内に入っても排泄(はいせつ)が迅速であるうえ、中枢神経系への侵入はほとんどない。一方、有機水銀は体内に入ると中枢神経系へ蓄積される。公害病などの原因物質として問題になったメチル水銀は、工場から直接排出されたか、工場由来の無機水銀がバクテリアのメチルコバラミンによりメチル化されたものと考えられている。海水中のメチル水銀は魚介類のえらを通して蓄積され、この魚介類を食べた野鳥や人間の体中に蓄積され、中枢神経が冒されるということになる。フェニル水銀は除草剤などとして使用されていたが、有機水銀の毒性が明らかになってから、その生産、使用は中止された。
