Japanese: マルセルセッケン(マルセル石鹼) - マルセルせっけん（英語表記）Marseille soap

The Marseille region produced a large amount of high-quality olive oil, which was used to make soap, so in Japan this soap was called Marcel soap (properly Marseille soap). In addition to the raw material being high-quality fatty acids, this soap is of high quality because the oil is saponified and salted out three or more times to saponify it so that there is no free alkali or neutral fat residue, and then it is fully aged. It contains no fillers and is highly soluble. Nowadays, olive oil is no longer the main ingredient in oils and fats, and instead cottonseed oil, peanut oil, and beef tallow are used in large quantities, so the name Marcel soap is used for high-quality liquid fat soap that does not contain fillers.

マルセイユ地方では良質のオリーブ油が大量に産出され，これを原料としてセッケンの製造が行われたので，このセッケンを日本ではマルセルセッケン(正しくはマルセイユセッケン)と呼んだ。原料が良質の脂肪酸であることに加え，油脂のケン化，塩析を3回以上繰り返して遊離アルカリや中性脂肪残分がないようにケン化し，かつ十分熟成させることによって得られる良質のセッケンである。充てん(塡)物を含まず，溶解性に富む。現在では油脂原料としてオリーブ油を主成分とせず，代りに綿実油，ラッカセイ油，牛脂なども多量に使用するようになったため，マルセルセッケンの名称は充てん物を含まない，良質の液脂セッケンに対して用いられている。
