A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family. It is found in the warm temperate zone from Kyushu to Honshu, growing on the forest floor or forest edges of deciduous broad-leaved trees. The underground stem spreads horizontally, and in early spring, a flower stalk or a basal leaf emerges from the end of the stem. The flower stalk grows to a height of 20-30 cm, and has three whorls of tripinnately pinnately compound leaves at the top. The basal leaves have long stalks and are tripinnately compound leaves arranged once or twice. It blooms as the leaves unfold, and a single white flower about 4 cm in diameter appears at the terminal end of the flower stalk, from which the Japanese name comes. The five sepals are broadly elliptical and white, and look like petals. The stems and leaves wither in early summer.
