Also known as the February 7th Incident, on February 1, 1923, workers on the Beijing-Hankou Railway, China's largest railway at the time, held a conference in Zhengzhou to form the All-China Trade Union. Wu Peifu, a member of the Zhili warlords who controlled the railway, used force to disband the conference, and protest strikes began along the entire line from February 4. On February 7, he sent in the military to launch a major crackdown. Thirty-two workers were killed at the Jiang'an Railway Factory in Hankou, where the All-China Trade Union headquarters was located, and other trade union bases in Zhengzhou, Changxindian and other areas were attacked, resulting in more than 40 deaths along the entire line, hundreds of injuries, more than 40 imprisonments, and more than 1,000 dismissals.
